On Friday morning, March 16, 2025, there was a spectacular chase in Rhineland-Palatinate, which caused a sensation. In the municipalities of Weitenburg and Höhr-Grenzhausen, a white BMW 1er raced with squeaky tires after the driver escaped a police check. The driver, a 25-year-old man, left the vehicle after the accident and fled to an adjacent forest. In the meantime, the three occupants of the car were arrested by the police. A searched inmate had drugs with them, while someone else could come up with cash with a suspicious amount. The police reacted immediately and used a drone of the Vallendar fire brigade with a thermal imaging camera to look for the fleeting driver.

The prudent efforts of the emergency services paid off. After about two hours of intensive search, the fleeting driver was discovered in the undergrowth of the forest and ultimately arrested. It turned out that he had no driver's license, stood under drugs and steered a stolen car. Because of these circumstances, the driver threatens several criminal proceedings.

The incident throws a dark light on the dangers of chase and dealing with stolen vehicles. At the same time, there were similar incidents in other parts of Germany. On December 17, 2024, a 15-year-old driver from Herne with a stolen VW Polo in Bochum carried out a chase with the police. The police tried to control the VW Polo at the Dorstener Straße/Riemker Straße intersection, but the teenager accelerated and fled towards the Dahlacker. His attempted escape ended when he lost control of the vehicle and collided with a traffic light mast. The driver suffered minor injuries, but was able to leave the vehicle independently. An ambulance brought him to the hospital for medical treatment.

A rapid drug test was positive and a blood sample was taken for further examination. The vehicle he had controlled was registered as stolen and suffered a total damage due to the accident. The need for a thorough police investigation became apparent in both cases, since such incidents can result in serious legal consequences for those involved.

These incidents illustrate the dangers associated with chase, and remind you that driving can have serious consequences under drugs and without driving license. The authorities must continue to act rigorously against such violations to make the streets safer.
