A general decline in the number of children per woman has been determined since 2017, but interrupted by a short-term increase during the Covid 19 pandemic in 2021. Between 2011 and 2016, the birth number rose from 1.59.

The average age of the mothers at birth was 31.7 years in 2023, while the fathers were 34.7 years. Compared to 2021, the age of the mothers has decreased slightly, while the fathers have constant values. The average age of the parents has increased continuously since 1991, with mothers being 27.9 and fathers 31.0 years old in 1991.

The declines in the birth number show a stabilization of the number of children per mother in two children and an increase in childless women. The final childless rate rose from 11 % (born in 1937) to 21 % (born 1966). In 1968, the number of children per woman with 1.49 children reached a historical low, whereby women of the 1970s until 2023 born more children than the women of the 1968 vintage. Those who tend to be younger have also contributed to improving the overall fertility.
