Bonn is arming business parking spaces with smart sensors for less parking stress!

On April 2, 2025, there are significant developments in the field of search for parking in Bonn. The city plans to convert a total of nine business parking spaces with modern electronic sensors. These innovative technologies offer information about the occupancy of the parking spaces and make it easier to identify free space quickly. The search for parking space for craft companies, social care services and delivery traffic is optimized.

The sensors specialize in providing data about the status of the parking spaces, i.e. whether they are free or occupied. At the same time, they provide valuable information about the occupancy and frequency. This data is not only important for the use of parking space itself, but also for the evaluation of the economic zones, which are reserved for vehicles with craftsman parking cards, social services and parcel deliverers. The chosen economic zones are strategically distributed throughout the city, at the following locations:

  • Hausdorffstraße 145-151, 234
  • Pützstraße 8
  • Bismarckstrasse 19
  • Ermekeilstraße 36
  • Lessingstrasse 51
  • Bonner Talweg in the area of IHK and Telekom

Mobile app for using parking space

To further simplify parking facilities, a new app is being developed. This will provide craft companies and social services current information on the parking situation. However, it will not be possible to reserve parking spaces in advance. However, drivers can target free parking spaces via the app.

This development is linked to the existing "Park and Joy" app, which was introduced in Bonn on July 16, 2018. The app enables drivers to easily pay parking fees using a smartphone and displays free parking spaces in the city center. Bonn is one of the pioneers in Germany that have implemented such a parking system.

The sensors for "Park and Joy" use the radio technology "Narrow Band Internet of Things (NB-IoT)" to minimize energy consumption and at the same time ensure a long range. For precise information on parking space availability, the app not only uses data from the sensors, but also integrates anonymized mobile phone data, weather and calendar information.

The goal: optimize traffic flow

The overarching goal of these measures is to improve the traffic situation in Bonn. The implementation of the sensors and the associated app should relieve traffic and make experience much more pleasant for users, guests and visitors. The use of edge computing in data processing and the connection to existing parking guidelines enable a real-time recording of the parking situation, which ensures a reduced search for parking space.

With these steps, Bonn not only positions itself as a pioneer in the area of innovative parking lot solutions, but also improves the quality of life of its citizens through optimized traffic control and lower parking.
