Bonn becomes more environmentally friendly: 71% of the paths sustainably until 2025!

Mobility in Bonn experiences a significant change. According to the study "Mobility in Germany in 2023", which was commissioned by the Federal Ministry of Transport, the proportion of sustainable transportation in the city has increased by 11 percentage points. The trend is evident in increased use of footpaths, bicycles and public transport (public transport). This will be presented in detail on May 14, 2025 on the mobility and traffic committee. Currently, 71 percent of road users in Bonn are triggering their paths.

The survey shows that 32 percent of the respondents are on foot, use 21 percent of the bike and 18 percent use public transport. In contrast, there are 30 percent that fall back on the car. The increase in 11 percentage points since 2017 illustrates the progressive change in the transport infrastructure and in the mobility behavior of Bonn's citizens.

progress in sustainable traffic

Mayor Katja Dörner emphasizes that the city is making progress in barrier -free footpaths, safe bicycle traffic, as well as an attractive public transport. The proportion of cycling has increased from 15 percent to 21 percent, which corresponds to an increase of 40 percent. The public transport share also gently increased by 1 percentage point to 18 percent.

City building councilor Helmut Wiesner emphasizes the need to switch to environmentally friendly means of transport, also called the environmental association. Bonn has an above-average attractive public transport offer, which is intended to promote the growth of environmentally friendly mobility. Numerous infrastructure projects are planned in the coming years, including new foot and bike bridges, a cable car and extensions of the light rail.

focus on future mobility measures

The steadily high passer -by frequency in the city center shows the interest in sustainable mobility. Future measures aim to improve foot traffic, to expand the public transport infrastructure and to strengthen the cycling network. Inter -municipal networking is also sought to ensure consistent mobility.

The upcoming presentation of the results of the study, which has surveyed over 218,000 households in Germany, including 2,000 in Bonn, is an important step in the analysis of the Modal Split, which serves as an indicator of mobility behavior. The city's goal is to increase the number of sustainable paths to 75 percent by 2030. This illustrates the clear focus of the city of Bonn on environmental and climate protection by rethinking mobility.

at a time when sustainable mobility is gaining in importance, it is crucial for the cities to recognize and react the needs of the citizens. These developments in Bonn are therefore not only relevant for the city itself, but could also have a role model for other municipalities.
