Gas consumption increases: This is how you save properly!
On December 31, 2024, the Federal Network Agency warns of increasing gas consumption in Germany and appeals to consumers to reduce gas consumption in order to save costs. President Klaus Müller emphasizes that it is worth saving, especially in view of the increase in gas consumption in the heating season from October to December. The industry recorded an increase of over 9 percent in gas consumption compared to the previous year, while the increase was 1.9 percent in the household and commercial sector.
The first half of the winter was colder than in 2023, the average temperature was 6.5 degrees, 0.6 degrees less than in the previous year. Despite the increase, gas consumption is 9.7 percent below the average of 2018 to 2021. Müller rates the gas supply as positive because the gas storage facilities are 70 percent filled. For 2025, the Federal Network Agency also expects higher gas prices because gas network charges and CO₂ prices will increase. The CO₂ price is increased from 45 to 55 euros per ton at the beginning of the year, and the gas storage levy was increased. However, Verivox reported about 0.5 percent of a price reduction in gas basic supply at the turn of the year, which lowers the average kilowatt hour price in gas basic supply to around 14 cents. The price for the cheapest new customer offer is around 10 cents, while in 2023 about 19 percent of all households related to a basic supply contract.

The rising network charges could make lowering budgetary prices unlikely, since three -digit billions of billions have to be invested in the network infrastructure. At the beginning of the year, the average price for electricity in basic supply increases by 0.3 percent. The gas prices for households are expected to increase, while the gas basic supply prices decrease by around 0.5 percent to around 14 cents per kilowatt hour and the cheapest new customer offers for gas providers are around 10 cents per kilowatt hour. Heating oil prices are expected to remain stable unless larger geopolitical crises, and district heating prices normalize with a decline in the single -digit percentage range.
