Young researchers convince with innovative projects in Troisdorf!
On February 21, 2025, the regional competition "Jugend Forscht" took place in the rooms of the Koblenz University of Applied Sciences. Around 120 young talents from the northern Rhineland-Palatinate presented their innovative projects. Including students from the municipal high school for the Altenforst in Troisdorf, who made an important contribution to reducing plastic waste with their research on the exploitation of plastic by flour beetle larvae. With her project, Nori Sophie Aurora Dietzel (14), Kati Jovana Rizmanoski (13) and Lukas Christian Grinat (13) secured the first prize in the category Biology of the "Jugend Fortscht Junior" competition.
The project by Leo Bucher and Pola Antonia Kowalski (both 18 years old) from the University of Bonn was particularly noteworthy. They researched the role of the beta-glucan binding protein (GBP) for microorganisms using DNA sequencing. Your outstanding work secured first place in the biology category. Prof. Dr. Annette Scheersoi, Vice -Rector for Sustainability at the University of Bonn, praised the creativity and the scientific claim of all participants and expressed their enthusiasm for the pioneering projects of the young researchers.diverse projects and innovative approaches
In addition, Julia Kirchner (11) from the Cardinal Frings-Gymnasium in Bonn presented their research, which examined how cardboard houses with different roof colors heat up at infrared light. Her realization that bright roofs remain cooler was just as convincing and brought her first place in geo- and spatial sciences. The project of Amadeus Nuri Ramin Petram and Mika Matthes (both 17) from the municipal St. Michael-Gymnasium in Bad Münstereifel was also impressive, which was developed by a portable, accumulated laser biathlon system for school sports.
The regional competition was supported by the Energy Supply of Middle Rhine (EVM), which has been a partner of the competition for over 20 years. Marcelo Peerenboom praised the creativity of the participants and their commitment to sustainability. The projects presented ranged from environmentally friendly alternatives to cling film to studies on the CO2 balance from insect flour to observations of breeding birds in the nature reserve.
overall results and outlook
18 children and adolescents qualified for the state level. The state competition will be held at BASF in Ludwigshafen from April 8th to April 10th. Previously, the “Jugend Forscht Junior” competition for younger participants takes place on May 8th and 9th at Boehringer Ingelheim. This platform not only promotes young scientists, but also the security of skilled workers in science and business, such as Dr. Jessica Bönsch, the executive director of the Jugend Fortschen Foundation, emphasized.
