Art and history: St. Wendel's new exhibition fascinates visitors!

The St. Wendel Museum invites you to a special highlight of its ongoing exhibition. On January 14, 2025, a special event will take place there, which focuses on the artistic and cultural history of the city. The life of Philipp Jakob Riotte, who was active in Vienna in the 1830s and became known for his clarinet concerts and music for children's ballet, is particularly emphasized. This musical homage is supplemented by the performance of a sonata for piano and violin, which Duchess Luise of Saxony-Coburg and Saalfeld is dedicated to, an important personality of the city history of St. Wendel.

Duchess Luise, who lived from 1800 to 1831, combines an interesting and at the same time tragic history with St. Wendel. The sons Ernst and Albert emerged from their marriage to Duke Ernst von Sachsen-Coburg-Saalfeld, the latter became known as the prince's consumption of Queen Viktoria of England. The conflicts existing between the couple ultimately led to a separation that culminated in their "exile" to St. Wendel in 1824. In the exhibition, quotes from their letters and a stop-motion film by Lydia Kaminski, which addressed their lives in a bourgeois environment, are to be shown.

The legacy of the Holy Wendelin

Another focus of the exhibition is dedicated to the Holy Wendelin, the city's namesake. Wendelin was part of the IRO-Scottish mission movement in the 6th to 8th centuries. His legend, which led to a pilgrimage movement to his grave in the 10th century, is vividly presented in the museum by a 21-piece painting cycle from the early 18th century. This cycle tells the life story of St. Wendelin based on a legend of 1704.

A particularly innovative element of the exhibition is the media station "Rad der Zeit". It offers visitors a chronological overview of city history, enriched with supportive illustrations and texts. An additional wall installation also ensures an exciting exchange between digital and analog knowledge transfer.
