After years of detention: Nahid Taghavi celebrates return to Germany!
On January 12, 2025, the German-Iranian women's rights activist Nahid Taghavi at Cologne/Bonn Airport, after over four years in Iranian imprisonment. Her return was celebrated by her daughter Mariam Claren, who posted an idea of herself and her mother via online service X and announced her joy about the release. Taghavi was arrested in Tehran in October 2020 and has been in the focus of international human rights organizations since then.
The Iranian authorities had sentenced Taghavi to a prison sentence of over 10 years and 8 months in August 2021. The allegation was "hazardous to national security" and "propaganda against the system", accusations that are often raised against human rights activists: inside. Taghavi was only detained because of the peaceful exercise of her right to freedom of opinion, which reflects the situation of numerous dissident: inside in Iran.
heavy conditions of detention
Nahid Taghavi spent her detention period in the notorious Evin prison in Tehran. According to reports, their detention was characterized by torture, isolation and poor medical care. Her daughter Mariam regretted the “four lost years” and the traumatic experiences that her mother had to do there. The Evin prison is known for its strict conditions and the unimaginable suffering that prisoners have to experience. Amnesty International has repeatedly criticized the violations of human rights in Iran and demands an immediate release of politically arrested
Julia Duchrow, General Secretary of Amnesty International in Germany, commented on the release of Taghavi and appealed to the Iranian government to released other imprisoned double nationals and non -violent political prisoners. Despite the return of Taghavi, the official statement of the Iranian authorities was left out for their release, which encourages uncertainty about the treatment of human rights activists in Iran.
context of the human rights situation in Iran
The human rights situation in Iran is alarming. Amnesty International reports on widespread practices such as torture, ill -treatment and illegal executions. In 2023 alone, at least 853 people were executed in Iran, a number that illustrates the extent of political oppression. The protest movement "Woman Life Freedom", which was triggered by the death of 22-year-old Mahsa (Zhina) Amini in September 2022, shows the increasing resistance to the repressive measures of the states and the brutality with which the authorities act against peaceful demonstrators.
The international community is asked to proceed against the increase in human rights violations in Iran and to work for the release of all political prisoners. The return of Nahid Taghavi is a bright spot, but the fights of those who still suffer in the regime's prisons must continue to be brought into focus.
