Public transport strike on March 11: ver.di fights for better wages!
On March 11, 2025, the United Service Union (ver.di) announces comprehensive company -related strikes in local public transport (public transport). This decision follows the unsuccessful collective bargaining negotiations, which took place on February 18, 2025 in Potsdam, and is intended to set a clear sign of better payment and attractive working conditions in the public service. Companies affected include Cologne Verkehrsbetriebe (KVB), Stadtwerke Bonn Bus and Bahn and the Rhein-Sieg-Verkehrsgesellschaft (RSVG). Betül Dietz, the spokeswoman for the ver.di confidence at KVB, is angrily commenting on the lack of signals from the employer side, while Frank Michael Munkler, union secretary, provides the prospect of expanded strikes. The union urges an improvement in working conditions, especially in view of the current lack of personnel.demands of ver.di
As part of the current tariff round, ver.di calls for a wage increase of 8 % or at least 350 euros more per month. In addition, the surcharges for stressful activities are to be increased, which increases training allowances by 200 euros per month and granted three additional free days. An innovative "my time account" should enable employees to have more time sovereignty. These demands aim to increase the attractiveness of jobs in the public service and reduce the workload of employees.
The employees react similarly in different areas of the public sector. Tens of thousands of people from nursing, daycare centers, waste disposal, social work, local transport, local authorities and federal authorities have already resigned. Around 45,000 employees recently participated in the strikes, including a demonstration with around 2,000 participants at the Cologne Neumarkt.
further developments and future negotiations
The next and third round of negotiations in this tariff conflict will take place again in Potsdam from March 14 to 16, 2025. These negotiations are part of a comprehensive process that affects more than 2.5 million employees in the public service of the federal and municipalities, the previous collective agreement of which ends on December 31, 2024. Ver.di also leads the collective bargaining in the name of other unions, including GdP, GEW, IG Bau and the DBB civil servant association and tariff union.
In addition, various regional strikes and warning strikes all over Germany report on growing dissatisfaction among employees. An incident that also contains the current situation occurred on February 13, 2025, when a vehicle raced into a strike train in Munich, which injured at least 28 people. He was described as a "alleged attack" by Bavaria's Prime Minister Markus Söder.
The unions hope to increase the pressure on employers through the strike measures and their demands and ultimately to get an improved result in the collective bargaining. The continuing strikes and the upcoming negotiations continue to be pursued and are carefully pursued.
