Deutsche Telekom has been faced with considerable customer complaints since April 1, 2025. Users report problems when surfing and calling, which is due to a throttling of the connection. The measure affects many contract customers, especially those that use their telephone SIM cards in routers. Consumer protection organizations have already raised the alarm and are calling for a review of the company's practices. In its 2015/2120 regulation, the European Union determined regulations that regulate open access to the Internet and allow certain traffic management measures. Under these circumstances, Telekom has adapted its throttling practice.

The affected tariffs in particular include the popular MagentaMobil and MagentaMobil flex. According to reports, customers who consume high amounts of data, for example through video streaming, suffer from the new regulations. Many users complain about slow loading times and poor data transmission, especially at peak times. The Bundesverband (VZBV) consumer center has warned Telekom for violating network neutrality and accusations that the company creates artificial scarcity through so-called peering agreements.

The throttling of the connection causes resentment among users and has attracted consumer advocates. Customers who use their telephone SIM cards in routers are particularly affected. This is perceived as an unjust practice because Telekom tries to avoid network overloads by reducing the speed for certain users. Another central concern is the special right of termination for contract customers. If the problems last, affected users can take advantage of the possibility of ending the contract prematurely in order not to remain in a contract with a reduced service for 24 months. This regulation gives customers a certain freedom of action to check alternative providers or to choose another tariff that better suits their needs.

EU roaming and data consumption

In addition, reference is made to the EU roaming control, which allows users to use mobile data outside of Germany only for a period of four months. These restrictions could lead to unexpectedly high costs on vacation. It is therefore particularly important that Telekom customers keep an eye on the new throttling measures and EU regulations in order not to suffer any financial disadvantages. Telekom faces the challenge of reconciling legal regulations and the satisfaction of its customers, while the users continue to suffer from the effects of throttling.
