growth in organized sports
In the context of the current sporting events, organized sport in Germany is faced with a record. According to a current statistics of the German Olympic Sports Association (DOSB), the sports clubs have recorded the highest number of memberships since the start of the survey on January 1, 2024. There was an increase of over 890,000 memberships, which corresponds to an increase of 3.20 % compared to the previous year. With 5,321,912 memberships, North Rhine-Westphalia provides the most athletes who have an increase of 4.35 %.
The growth among the younger members is particularly gratifying: in the age group of 0 to 14 years there was an increase of 9.32 % (+455.178). This shows that almost every second child in Germany is a member of a sports club. Despite this positive development, the clubs face challenges that ranged from the need for modern sports infrastructures to a lack of volunteers. DOSB representative Michaela Röhrbein emphasizes the importance of political support to strengthen volunteering and to improve the sports infrastructure.
