Volt consciousness grows: three candidates from Bonn and Rhein-Sieg ready for the choice!
On January 13, 2025, the Volt party made major progress regarding its election approval in Bonn and the Rhein-Sieg district. The three direct candidates, who will be on the ballots for the upcoming elections on February 23, are Valeska Huland, Thomas Peter and Marcel Landsberg. They represent the constituencies Rhein-Sieg II, Bonn and Rhein-Sieg I. Volt has collected over 600 valid support signatures, whereby 30 % of the necessary signatures for the state list in North Rhine-Westphalia have already been achieved, where a total of 2,000 signatures are required.
Thomas Peter, resident in Bad Honnef, runs in Bonn and is supported by Marcel Landsberg from Königswinter in the election. Landsberg reported on the challenge of collecting the signatures of around 20 inhabitants. Valeska Huland from Bornheim sees a decisive factor for the election campaign in the joint effort of the different constituencies. It will compete against the CDU candidate Norbert Röttgen in the constituency of Rhein-Sieg II.
the election process and the support
The signatures collected serve to register on the ballot and are not an election promise. The signature is submitted to the responsible office, where the election entitlement is checked. Interestingly, support from members of other parties is permitted, but per election may only be signed for a circular election proposal and a direct candidacy. Another important aspect is that the signed forms are destroyed after the election to protect the privacy of the signatories.
For the submission of the signatures, strict deadlines apply. Support signings must be submitted to the responsible election management no later than 69 days before the election. In addition, Germans abroad have to fill out special forms to ensure their voting rights, as described in the information of the Federal Electoral Manager.
formal permits and future steps
The formal approval of the district election committees is still pending, planned with conferences on January 21st in the Rhein-Sieg district and on January 24th in Bonn. The Volt party, which was founded on March 3, 2018, has a total of 8,257 members in Germany and around 54,000 in Europe by January 2025. Volt is pursuing a pan -European, federal, social liberal and progressive orientation.
With five MPs in the European Parliament and a presence in the city councilors of Bonn and Cologne, Volt strives to advance the urgently needed changes in the EU structures. This includes an EU government elected by the people to strengthen the democratic process in Europe. The candidates plan a number of visibility campaigns and panel discussions to introduce themselves to the voters and to communicate their specific concerns in the election campaign.
For the further course of the election process, the support of the citizens is of crucial importance, whereby the proposed signature campaign of VOLT continues to demonstrate its relevance.
Overall, it shows that Volt is well positioned to raise a voice in the upcoming election campaign and to continue to establish itself in the political landscape of Germany.
