50 years of Borken Kreis: ceremony with tree planting and honors!
On May 6, 2025, regional dignitaries gathered at the Losberg School in Stadtlohn to ceremoniously celebrate the 50th anniversary of the Borken district. This symbolic event was aimed at planting a flower scot, which serves as a sign of connection and good coexistence within the municipal family in the Borken district. The occasion is reminiscent of the reorganization of the communities in North Rhine-Westphalia, which took place five decades ago and led to the formation of today's Borken district. The district administrator Dr. Kai Zwicker and Mayor Berthold Dittmann and Ludger Konrad, member of the Board of Trustees of the "Kulturlandschaft Kreischaft Kreis Borken", were prominent guests of the ceremony.
"The planting of this tree not only illustrates historical connection, but also our commitment to nature conservation," emphasized Dr. Zwicker. In addition to the festive act, a sign was set up that informs about the occasion of the anniversary. The "Kulturlandschaft Kreis Borken Foundation" supported the traditional tree planting campaign both organizationally and financially. Your goal is to preserve and develop the Münsterland park landscape. For more information on the anniversary celebrations, the website of the Borken district is a valuable resource.
A look at the history of the district of Borken
The district of Borken was founded on January 1, 1975 and has since developed into a dynamic business location. The first years after the foundation were shaped by a slow integration process, in which important actors such as the then district administrator Franz Skorzak and senior district director Raimund Pingel contributed significantly to the merging of administrative staff. Around 850 employees were employed to combine the various administrations under one roof.
In the first few years, the district administration focused on structural policy and vocational training in order to counter the challenges in agriculture and the textile industry. The construction of a new central administration building was initiated in 1980 by an architectural competition and realized from 1981 to 1984.
cultural and economic development
The development of the Borken district was also remarkable in other areas. The region was strongly challenged by a historical decline in the textile industry in the 1970s and 1980s. Figures show that unemployment increase during this time. However, the establishment of the business development agency helped to strengthen the region economically and to establish new business areas such as plastic and IT economy.
The street infrastructure improved through the construction of the A31 from 1982 and the connection to a powerful federal road network, while the rail connections accepted. These infrastructural changes contributed to the development of the district as a logistics and production location and improved the quality of life of the over 380,000 inhabitants.
With a high proportion of under 18-year-olds in the population and a differentiated education system that includes vocational colleges and local institutions, the Borken district relies on the promotion of young talents and a sustainable future. The cross -border relationships with the neighboring region and the Euregio offer additional opportunities for the population.
The anniversary is not only a reason to celebrate, but also an opportunity to reflect on the achievements of the past five decades and to actively shape the future of the Borken district.
