Smooth streets: Ten accidents in the Borken district - caution is advised!
The winter conditions led to a worrying number of accidents on the streets on January 8, 2025 in the Borken district. Weather -related, smooth lanes caused dangerous situations in road traffic. There were a total of ten accidents that night, in which road users are sometimes slightly injured.
The cities of Ahaus, Gronau and Südlohn were particularly affected. In Ahaus, a cyclist faced the smooth underground on the street Am Schloßgraben around 8:45 a.m. and fell. He was taken to the hospital with minor injuries. A pedelecist also slipped on the Goosestegge street in Ahaus-Wessum at 8:25 a.m., while in Gronau a cyclist on the street on the dining side fell at the same time and was slightly injured. A moped driver also fell as a result of the smoothness and had to be taken to the hospital by a ambulance.Caution in winter traffic
The police report emphasizes the need for all road users to drive particularly carefully in view of the continuing winter conditions. The appeal for the adapted driving style is all the more important considering the current incidents.
In previous years there were similar developments. According to the Environmental Federal Agency , the number of road traffic accidents due to winter road conditions in January, February and December was often very high in the past. Snow and ice cream and ice cream are particularly common causes of accidents with personal injury. Statistically, however, the proportion of these accidents has tended to be low in recent years.
The year 2020 and 2021, on the other hand, recorded an increase in accidents, which was due to the Covid 19 pandemic and the associated regulations. In general, the risk of accidents in the autumn and winter months is higher, which is to be addressed by modern research and transport infrastructure projects, such as the program for adapting to climate change.
The current events in the district of Borken again underline how traffic safety can be influenced due to the weather. Earlier data have shown that road users adapt their speed to the external conditions, which can lead to a decline in accidents. Nevertheless, the risk, especially in the cold months, remains and requires increased attention in road traffic.
