Water retention in the border area: fight together against the drought!

On March 24, 2025, the opening event of the DIWA partial project "Water retention in the border area" took place in the Haarmühle Landgasthof in Ahaus-Alstätte. The event was organized by the Nature and Environment Department of the Borken district and was aimed at farmers from the regions of the water and soil associations lower AA/Wittes Venn and lower berkel area. Around 40 participants from various institutions, including the Waterschap Rijn en IJssel, water and soil associations, agricultural chambers and municipalities, were present. The aim of the project is to implement measures to maintain water in the landscape and to promote a common learning process.

The DIWA project, which stands for "Drowht strategies in Water Management", pursues the goal of supporting the cross-border control of dry periods. This is done through the cooperation between German and Dutch partners who want to develop sustainable solutions for water management. The implementation of the sub -project "Water retention in the Achterhoek border area" includes practical approaches to water retention in order to enable the targeted retention of water in the affected regions. Testing controllable drainage shafts and the use of small traffic jams in drainage trenches is intended to improve the efficiency of precipitation use.

planned measures

As part of the project, numerous measures are planned to support the stability of agricultural production and at the same time contribute to the promotion of environmental protection and biodiversity. Central ideas include:

  • use of water management systems
  • Changes in soil management to adapt to changing climatic conditions

The entire project duration extends from 2024 to 2027, with the financial resources provided by the European Union as well as the ministries and provinces of North Rhine-Westphalia, Gelderland and Overijssel. Interested area administrators have been able to register for participation in the project since March 19, 2025.

cross -border cooperation

The project promotes the exchange between the various regional water authorities and associations in order to jointly address the challenges in water management. The focus is on the project area, which extends through the Dutch regions of Winterswijk and Haaksbergen as well as the German area of Ahaus and Vreden. The exchange of experiences is supported by cross -border field visits and specialist events that take place regularly to monitor the developed measures and adapt them to the latest circumstances.

In addition, the project is classified in the context of existing initiatives, such as the project "Effecting Climate Change on Water availability - adaptation to drought and drought in Germany" (Wadklim). The current water availability in Germany is researched here and the future development is analyzed under the conditions of climate change. This is essential to avoid future water usage conflicts and to develop strategies for use of water.
