Jugendkirche Münster starts interactive series Spotlight via fasting!

The youth church Münster has created a new series of events called "Spotlight", which is aimed at young people in the diocese. The aim of this series is to convey a new picture of the church and to enable an exchange at eye level with young people. The kick-off event took place on March 28, 2025 in the auditorium of the Maria-Sibylla-Merian Realschule in Borken-Weseke. Firmlings from the surrounding places Borken, Raesfeld and Gescher took part.

under the title "Fasting - Gamechanger or senseless trend?" an interactive format was designed. Moderated by Toni, introduced the event to fasting, supported by Auxiliary Bishop Dr. Christoph Hegge. Fasting is usually understood in Christianity as an act of waiver, but the young people learned that it is also regarded as a personal profit in religions.

interreligious exchange and experiences

The topic of fasting was illuminated from various religious perspectives. Auxiliary Bishop Hegge explained that fasting also serves to consciously steer thoughts and reflect on relationships with fellow human beings. In addition, information about the Ramadan was provided at three stations that the young people were able to explore interactively: "What is Ramadan?", "More than eating anything?" And "a day in Ramadan". A video contribution addressed the fast in Judaism and a Muslim student reported on his personal experiences.

Jasmin Laudano, the head of the youth church, welcomed the participants and emphasized the importance of family time. The topic of digital detox and climate box also took into account. The event included an interactive quiz in which the firmlings could take part in the mentimeter app. These formats not only promote exchange for spirituality, but also the understanding of different beliefs and their practices.

feedback and outlook

After completing the official program, the participants received dates to symbolically break fasting in Islam. The response of the young people was positive. Participants like Lenn Schmeing and Alexander Kappenhagen said that they liked the event and that they could actively participate. Jasmin Laudano was also satisfied with the successful exchange and the opportunity to discuss different perspectives.

The "Spotlight" event series is not only limited to Borken; A total of five appointments are planned for 2025, including appointments in Münster, Kerken, Selm and Heek, which also deal with relevant topics. This series is part of a more comprehensive interreligious dialogue, which is also funded by initiatives such as the Berlin dialogue of religions for children and adolescents, which has existed since 2014. Such initiatives are crucial for inter -religious exchange and promoting understanding between the different faiths.

Further information on the series of events and registration are available on the website of the Jugendkirche Münster. Groups can take part there by March 26, 2025 to get involved in the upcoming events.
