House of history: Gasthaus Meyer celebrates 280 years of tradition!
The story of the old Gasthaus Meyer in Epe goes back to 1660. The inn has always been operated by the Meyer family, who led an inn before 1660. However, records from this time were lost in the Thirty Years' War. The first documented owner was Wilhelmy Meyers, the original UR-UR-URGROSTFATER by Achim Meyer, the current operator of the family company in a ninth generation.
Henrici Meyers, born around 1695, was an important successor and built a residential building in today's Merschstrasse, which also included a simple bar industry. Together with his wife Phenenna, he ran this economy, which was probably only open on weekends. The range was limited to high -spiritual drinks, while beer was only offered on special occasions due to the limited durability. The dining room was probably the living room, and special sanitary requirements did not exist at the time.
Development of the inn
Over the centuries, the Meyers lived mainly from agriculture and (colonial) trade, whereby the inn served as a sideline. Joanis Bernardus Meyers, born in 1728, took over Henrici's operation. Engelbert Meyers, born in 1764, was the first "Meyer" without "S" who led the inn, followed by Bernhard-Heinrich Meyer, born in 1792, who was known as a small trader, host and messenger. Due to this messenger activity, the “Bourden” family was given until the end of the 19th century.
Hermann Meyer, born in 1845, continued a master painting business and his successor Heinrich Meyer, born in 1889, continued this business. In 1924 he built a large ballroom for up to 500 people, which was used by Eper Schützenverein and other groups until the Second World War.
In 1983, the company had to be relocated to today's location on the Cardinal von Galen Ring due to the local core renovation. Walter Meyer, born in 1927, rebuilt the inn here. Since 1989 Achim Meyer, supported by his wife Astrid, has been growing the family business, while the next generation, consisting of the children Kathrin, Hermann and Henrik, is growing in the company, as Altes-gasthaus-meyer.de reports.
