Sustainability in culture: new advice started in the Münsterland!

On April 4, 2025, Münsterland e.V. launched a new initiative to support art and cultural institutions in implementing sustainable practices. With a comprehensive range of advice, the association wants to help the cultural area reduce its ecological footprint and to orientate itself to the goals of ecological sustainability. According to press-service.de the support is led by the head of the cultural office, Andre Sebastian, who recently completed further training to become "transformation manager sustainable culture".

Sustainability advice includes various elements, including strategic environmental management systems, instruments for climate silence and knowledge of material cycles. It is important that sustainability is conveyed positively and is not associated with waiver and prohibited. The advisory offer is available free of charge and is also supported free of charge by regular workshops on ecological sustainability in the cultural company. Andre Sebastian at sebastian@muensterland.com is available for contacting advice.

collaboration with the federal cultural foundation

The current efforts in the Münsterland are in line with the nationwide initiatives of the federal cultural foundation, which has already developed extensive programs to support cultural institutions in terms of their climate effect. The "Zero" program invites art and cultural institutions to participate in a nationwide sustainability initiative. This initiative has three modules: the "Fonds Zero" for project promotion, the "Akademie Zero" for further training and the regional network meetings called "Network Zero", such as cultural foundation-des-bunde.de reports.

As part of the "Fund Zero", cultural institutions are given the opportunity to test climate -neutral forms of production and to implement innovative projects. From 2023 to 2027, a total of 8 million euros will be made available, with 25 projects from ten federal states being funded with 3.04 million euros. The projects cover various areas, including theater, dance, music and visual art. The latest developments provide a further increase in the program for 4 million euros, while in April 2024 new projects with a total volume of 2.75 million euros are recommended.

education and networking

The "Akademie Zero" promotes the exchange of experiences and the further training of the participants, with workshops and training, which are designed especially for cultural institutions. The latest academy took place in Leipzig in September 2024. In addition, the network organizes regional meetings, which are planned for 2025 in North Rhine-Westphalia, Baden-Württemberg and Berlin/Brandenburg to strengthen the exchange between the institutions.
