Accident on the bus stop: boy injured, driver cannot brake!
On Thursday afternoon at 1:10 p.m., an accident occurred at a bus stop on Vennweg in Burlo, in which a boy was injured. While he was waiting for the school bus with other children, the boy leaned forward to watch the approaching bus. There was a touch with the front vehicle corner of the slowly moving bus. The 39-year-old driver from Borken could not prevent the collision.
After the incident, the boy complained of pain. Fortunately, medical treatment was not necessary on site, and the boy was handed over to his legal guardian. Such accidents raise questions about traffic safety at stops, a topic that has become more important in the recent past.
traffic safety at stops
According to the investigations of the UDV in 2018 4,130 occurred in 3,294 accidents with personal loss at stops. These accidents led to 46 deaths and 815 serious injuries. Around 94 % of these accidents took place terrifyingly. The statistics show that there are often conflicts at stops that are caused not only by vehicle inmates, but also by pedestrians and cyclists.
The UDV carried out a comprehensive examination that took into account several road user groups and the number of struggle on various types of stops. They showed that the bus stops on “free routes” have the lowest accident rate rate, while the density of crashed pedestrians at stops in the urban area is higher.
recommendations to improve security
The Study On traffic safety at stops, carried out in cooperation with the Technical University of Dresden, identified various problem areas and determined security levels for different types of stops. It showed that accidents at stops occur relatively rarely compared to total accidents, but they make up 1.1 percent of all accidents with personal injury on German roads.
In order to increase security at stops, a number of recommendations were set up. This includes measures such as the improvement of middle separations, signal -related fuses and preventing parking in stop areas. Crossing aids should be a maximum of 20 meters from the stopping position to lead pedestrians more safely across the street.
The tragedy of the accident in Burlo underlines the need to continuously improve the security at stops. Similar incidents may be prevented in the future with targeted measures.
