Bottrop experiences basketball fever: primary schools fight for the title!
On February 11, 2025, an exciting basketball tournament of the primary schools took place in the Bottroper Dieter-Renz-Halle, in which around 90 children from six Bottrop primary schools enthusiastically took part. This event, which was carried out for the second time as part of the Sportif Initiative, is based on the goal of inspiring the elementary school students: to inspire basketball for the sport and to provide them with a positive sports experience. The tournament was supported and organized by schoolchildren of the Josef Albers-Gymnasium as well as by the West German Basketball Association.
In total, the schools reported ten teams that played in mixed groups according to the mini basketball rules in 4 against 4. The participants were divided into two preliminary round groups. The Richard Wagner School finished the tournament winner in the end after winning 13: 0 in the final against their own school team 1. The Ludgerusschule followed in third place, which won 8: 4 against the Welheim primary school in the game for third place. All participating teams received certificates, medals and a new basketball, sponsored by the West German basketball association.
complementary competitions and awards
In addition to the tournament, a Skills Contest took place that tested coordination, reaction and skill of the participating children. The fastest girl was awarded the Richard Wagner School and the fastest boy from the Astrid Lindgren School. Both received their own basketball as a price. Nina Heithausen from the steering group of the Sportif project was positive about the enthusiasm and commitment of the children during the tournament day and emphasized the organization of the pupils of the Josef Albers-Gymnasium.
The broad participation of schools such as the Albert Schweitzer School, Droste-Hülshoff School and the two schools already mentioned shows the ongoing interest in basketball among primary school children. This is an important aspect of promoting young talent in basketball. Over the past two years, over 550 primary schools have participated in similar projects, which promotes the establishment of a basic basketball week and facilitates access to this sport. This initiative aims to actively involve children and offer them a comprehensive experience through various exercises and games, as is reported by Basketball-Bund.de
importance of promoting young talent
The added value of such events should not be underestimated. The Institute for Applied Training Science (IAT) actively participates in the transparent preparation of data on the promotion of young talent performance in order to sustainably support the young athlete scene. This is how athlete gets: Inside and trainers: Interior information about training structures and funding opportunities that enable you to train and develop more specifically.
In the basic basketball week, schools are encouraged to work with local basketball clubs in order to secure direct access to committed trainers and additional equipment. The combination of tournament, Skills Contest and targeted promotion of young talent offers a comprehensive platform for talents and not only promotes the individual, but also the community.
