Broken fasting in Bottrop: Mayor Tischler strengthens the dialogue!
On March 24, 2025, Mayor Bernd Tischler took part in a significant breaking of fasting in the central mosque in Bottrop. This event took place after sunset at 6:52 p.m. and marks the end of daily fasting a month. Around 350 Muslim women and men as well as other guests gathered to eat and celebrate together. In his speech, Tischler emphasized the importance of dialogue, communication and social cohesion, values that are particularly important in today's world.
The parishioners of the central mosque have actively tried to invite everyone present, including the residents from refugee accommodation. Association chairman Halil Demir reported that more than 300 people have been breaking the fast every day for four years. Tischler also emphasized his previous participation in a break of fasting in the Marie-Curie Realschule, where the feeling of belonging together was particularly pronounced. These experiences illustrate the importance of Ramadan as a time of community and togetherness.
Intercultural exchange at schools
The event was the result of joint efforts by parents, students and teachers, the representatives of the Evangelical parish in Bottrop and Iman Tuncay Nazik from the mosque in Herne-Röhlinghausen invited. Moderator Emilio Kämpf asked interesting questions about the similarities between Christianity and Islam, which promoted a respectful dialogue among the participants.
Festival of the community
A warm cooperation was also felt by the fifth graders, who reported on their experiences with fasting. A musical contribution by Lea Ramadani and Mr. Radscheid complemented the appealing program. The organizers Bouchra El-Amriti and Marcel Morbe expressed their satisfaction about the success of the event, which laid the foundation for future collaboration with conversations and culinary discoveries.
religious representatives again emphasized how important the common is in society. The presentation of the students about fasting in Christianity and Islam was praised as well prepared and committed. Gratitude was given the teachers, the school management and the student representative who support the event. These initiatives are intended to form the basis for other projects that further strengthen the cooperation between cultures.
The month Ramadan, who is ninth month of the Islamic lunar calendar, is a time of fasting, prayer, self -reflection and community. It is an opportunity to reduce prejudices and promote a better understanding with each other. Events such as the fasting break in Bottrop and at the WBG are steps in the right direction to put these values into practice and bring the neighbors closer together, as well as the "Ramadan Together" initiative in Frankfurt, which enables it to gain insight into Muslim family life.
