Mysterious disappearance: Where did Wölfin Gloria from NRW have gone?

A well-known wolf pack in North Rhine-Westphalia, led by the Wölfin Gloria (GW954F), has been missing for several months. The Wölfin migrated from Lower Saxony to Schermbeck in 2018 and gave birth to a total of nine puppies from 2020 to 2023. But the pack may seem to have been wiped out. The nature conservation association (NABU) expresses great concern about the ominous circumstances of the disappearance, which could coincide with conflicts between wolves and grazing animals in the region. Especially in September 2023, Gloria tore seven sheep in Bottrop-Kirchhellen and caused further losses under the cattle

The search action of the State Environment Agency (Lanuv) comprised 35 kilometers in the Schermbeck area, but no traces of wolves were found. Rolf Fricke from Nabu Bottrop has regretted that the likelihood that the pack was wiped out must be considered very high. A spokesman for the state office, however, emphasizes that the lack of evidence does not necessarily mean that the wolves have been killed; Instead, they could also be absent for a long time. Most recently, there were indications of wolf activities in November 2024 when two mini goats were torn and an injured wolf was spotted.

mmenschen and the wolves - the suspicion of illegal killing

The concerns of the NABU that the wolves may have been illegally killed are increasing. Conservationists exclude a natural death of the animals because no remains have been found. In addition, reference is made to the "SSS" principle (shooting, shoveling, silence), which in such cases may have been applied by hunters. There were also changes in the behavior of the wild animals, which indicates the disappearance of the wolves. Unlike the NABU, the natural authorities brought the opportunity to play that the wolves are simply "undermined" in the landscape - a theory that has already been in the past in some cases.

The concerns about the fate of Gloria and her pack are increasing while the examinations are driven by NABU. The case was presented to the Attorney General in Hamm, since the public prosecutor's office in Dortmund saw no reason for further investigations. NABU representatives demand that all possibilities are being examined to clarify the event, while there were also witnesses in the case of the injured wolf that could possibly provide additional information.

The protection of wolves in Germany remains a controversial topic, especially in regions in which farmers and hunters regularly come into conflict with the predator -like animals. The situation around Gloria and her pack could have an impact on the future regulations on wolf management in NRW. While some fear that people and nature are in a constant conflict, conservationists emphasize the importance of preserving these impressive animals that are part of our domestic fauna.

at a time when nature conservation and agriculture often contradict each other, the question remains what happened to the wolf pack. Will there be answers to the critical questions that raise the disappearance of Gloria and her descendants? Only through further research and a respectful dialogue between everyone involved can be found.
