SUV frenzy in Germany: rural regions lead the trend!

The SUV boom in Germany is increasingly starting to shape the streets. According to current data, SUVs already make up 40 percent of all new cars. In rural regions in particular, the proportion of SUVs is even higher than in urban areas. This development is influenced by the different forces of demand and the taste of the consumers, which are increasingly opting for vehicles with a high level of sportiness, off -road capacity and an increased seating position.

Interestingly, the average weight of a new car has risen to 1.6 tons, which corresponds to an increase of 20 percent compared to two decades ago. Despite this increase in weight, the price seems to be an obstacle for many SUV owners for many SUV owners. The cities are already starting to react to this development with new parking costs: in Koblenz, for example, the park price is staggered based on the vehicle weight, which leads to higher costs for SUV owners.

SUV shares in Germany

An analysis by Verivox shows that the SUV share in Germany varies a lot. Bottrop has a SUV share that is 26 percent above the national average, while Ingolstadt 15 percent above and Munich follows 11 percent. However, it becomes increasingly clear that SUVs in urban centers 11 percent are less common than on the national average. Münster has the lowest share among the major cities at 35 percent below average.

market development and trends

2024 turned out to be a mixed year for the car market in Germany, in which a total of 2,817,331 new cars were registered. This corresponds to a slight decline by 1 percent compared to the previous year. Despite this market situation, SUVs are asked: 42 percent of the new cars were SUVs, which is 1,168,322 new registrations. The offer ranges from 173 different models that cover small SUVs to luxury vehicles.

Consumers show growing demand for electrical and hybrid SUVs, which is supported by environmental awareness and state grants. The Volkswagen Group dominates the market, with 11 of the 20 best-selling SUVs of VW. There are also new successful in the brand segment, including the BYD SEAL with 473 new registrations since May 2024, while models such as VW ID.4 and the Tesla Model Y recorded significant losses.

In summary, it can be said that the SUV market in Germany is still on growth course. This is supported by the increasing prosperity, the preferences of consumers and the innovative strength of the automobile manufacturers. The coming years should remain exciting for this segment of demand for SUVs as well as the development of new models.
