Young talents design digital wooden picture frames in school!

On April 22, 2025, 11 students from the Anne Frank Comprehensive School Havixbeck-Billerbeck started an innovative project: the development of a digital picture frame with an Arduino control. This project takes place in close cooperation with a local carpenter, which specializes in the precise production of back walls and frames with the help of modern CNC milling technology. Loud Kreis-coesfeld.de the framework of the picture frame is not only functional, but also individually designed, which is made possible by the use of CNC technology.

The chosen technologies are ideal for conveying basic programming knowledge to the students and at the same time deepening their understanding of wood processing techniques. The project managers Dirk Teichmann and Markus Brameier, both technology teachers, attach particular importance to the fact that the young people can integrate various designs and functions into their framework during the project. This not only promotes their technical skills, but also their creativity.

practical insights into wood processing

As part of the project, the students organized a visit to the Kawentsmann carpentry in Nottuln. Here you could not only experience wood processing up close, but also learn practical skills. In the school's workroom, the wooden structure of the picture frame is finally put together, glued and sanded to ensure a high quality end product.

The CNC milling machine that is used in carpentry ensures precise and individual designs. CNC, which stands for Computer Numerical Control, not only improves efficiency in production, but also helps to minimize human errors. Technology is very popular these days, since it also enables hobby tables to implement complex projects with high precision, as Want.net

objective and support

The main goal of this project is to convey practical experience in technology, design and teamwork to participating. The project is supported by the ZDI network district of Coesfeld, which ensures that the students receive valuable insights into modern technologies and can expand their skills. The presentation of the completed picture frames and results is expected to take place at school in summer 2025.

The project is not only an excellent opportunity for the students to develop their skills, but also a valuable experience in the use of contemporary technologies such as Arduino in connection with proven handicraft skills. This connection between craft and computer science shows how important interdisciplinary approaches are in education to prepare young people for the challenges of the future.
