Safe roads: Tempo controls in the Coesfeld district start next week!

The road traffic department of the Coesfeld district has announced speed controls for the coming week. These controls are part of a continuous initiative to improve traffic safety in the region and are carried out in the week from April 28 to May 3, 2025. Specific measurement locations where speed monitoring will take place are planned.

in Coesfeld will be measured on the Kalksbecker Weg on Monday, April 28, 2025. On Tuesday, April 29, the control moves to Nottuln to Schenkingstrasse. Wednesday, April 30th, the focus is on Bergstrasse in Nordkirchen, while on the holiday, May 1st, no measurements are made. On Friday, May 2, Dülmens Elsa Brandström-Straße is the goal of the controls, followed by the L 555 in Havixbeck on Saturday, May 3rd

flexibility of planning

The planning of the controls can change at short notice, depending on unpredictable organizational or local reasons. In addition, it is not excluded that further measurement locations will be added. In addition to the measures of the district administration, the police will also actively carry out speed controls in the district area in order to further increase traffic safety.

at European level, traffic safety is a central topic. Every year, thousands of people in the European Union lose their lives in traffic accidents or suffer serious injuries. Between 2010 and 2020, the number of road traffic fats in Europe fell by 36 percent. In 2019 there were 22,800 traffic fatalities, while in 2020 the number fell to 4,000 less.

statistical insights

Preliminary statistics show that in 18 EU member states, the number of traffic fatalities is at a record low. However, the security situation on the streets varies greatly; Sweden has the safest rate of 85 traffic fatalities per 1 million inhabitants in 2020 in 2020 with 18 traffic fatalities per 1 million inhabitants. The EU average was 42 racing dead per 1 million inhabitants, significantly below the global average of over 180.

Interestingly, young people between the ages of 18 and 24 make up a significant proportion of the road dead. Although this age group is only 8 percent of the population in the EU, 12 percent of the racing deads were out of this group this year. Nevertheless, it can be seen that the number of traffic fatalities in this age group has decreased by 43 percent since 2010.

The data illustrates that men are disproportionately affected: 76 percent of the traffic fatalities were men, a pattern that is observed in all Member States. The age layer of over 65-year-olds also shows a worrying development, since 28 percent of the racing dead were recorded in this age group in 2018. This shows the importance of ongoing security measures, both locally through controls and at European level through statistical -based initiatives.
