Attention, women! Pockets are targeting your smartphones!
The Dortmund police warn of an increasing number of pickpocketing that are aimed at women. These thefts occur mainly in drugstores and a shopping center in the city center. The focus of the perpetrators lies on women who wear their smartphones unprotected in handbags or jackets. Statistics show that a total of 85 such thefts were recorded between September 2023 and March 2024, which indicates an alarming development, which increases especially in the darker season when people are in closed rooms.
Last year, the authorities were able to identify and arrest two suspects. One of them, a 19-year-old, was discovered in a rest disadvantage, while a 21-year-old was taken up during a similar incident. The 21-year-old, an Algerian, was deported in October 2024 and received a ban on returning. Although after the arrests there was initially a decline in pick -up steels, the cases are now increasing again. The criminal police see a connection with band theft, since video recordings show that the perpetrators are working in terms of division: a perpetrator distracts the customer while an accomplice steals the smartphone.
The danger in the city center
according to nordstadtblogger.de there were a total of 150 stolen smartphones in a similar period. Women in particular should be careful to keep their valuables in closed bags. The police also recommend using a complex code for access to smartphones to increase security. A simple code, such as "0000" or "1234", is not sufficient and should be avoided. Ideally, an alphanumeric code should be used, which includes at least twelve characters.
on Ruhrnachrichten.de It is specifically pointed out that the perpetrators often increase the risk of potential victims. The system of the thefts has increased, which is evidenced by the current accumulation of these practices. This means that many women feel unsafe while they are on the road in the city center.
a widespread problem
according to bundespolizei.de is one of the most frequent crimes in German major cities. In 2021, 72,903 pickpockets were displayed across Germany, a decline compared to previous years. The numbers nevertheless show a worrying situation because many thefts remain unnoticed. Perpetrators are also often active internationally and work professionally.
The police appeal to the citizens of paying attention to their valuables and taking preventive measures in order to protect themselves against thefts. The increased security awareness can help to minimize the risk of becoming the victim of such a crime.
