Dortmund is progressing: Free drinking water dispenser for everyone!

In Dortmund, a new and promising pilot project for the provision of free drinking water is launched. The plan stipulates that drinking water dispensers are installed in central urban buildings such as the Berswordthalle at the town house and the town hall of the town hall. This was from the SPD fraction Dortmund and the group of Bündnis 90/Die Grünen decided.

The main goal of the project is to improve access to fresh water, especially on hot days. Environmentalists and initiators emphasize the apartment and the advantages that the project for the health of the citizens brings. Sustainability also plays a central role: Bound-bound drinking water causes less resource consumption and CO₂ emissions compared to bottle drinks. Veronika Rudolf, the environmental policy spokeswoman for the SPD council group, explicitly emphasizes health promotion and the positive ecological footprint of the project.

implementation plans and extensions

The city administration, under the direction of Mayor Thomas Westphal, was commissioned to create a specific schedule for the project start. The possibility is also on the agenda to open up further locations for drinking water dispensers and to check the equipment of the meeting rooms in the town hall. This would offer the citizens additional access to free drinking water and strengthen the city's service -oriented approach as an important part of the urban infrastructure.

Dortmund already has 31 drinking fountains that have been available in various districts since 1987 and also offer free access to drinking water. These wells are regularly serviced by the Dortmund Stadtwerke (DEW21), but they are not in operation due to weather conditions in the winter months. The new project could not only expand access to water, but also serve as a model for municipal initiatives in other cities.

FAZIT

The introduction of free drinking water dispensers in Dortmund is an important step towards more sustainability and better health care for the citizens. The decision of the city administration to install such systems in central public buildings is a logical expansion of the existing water supply. The positive environmental influence and the service to the citizens are clearly in the foreground. A sustainability approach that protects resources and at the same time promotes health does justice to the need for environmentally friendly solutions.
