Dortmund's U19 fails again: Dream of the title bursts against Madrid

In the latest development around the U19 of Borussia Dortmund, it is clear that the club is experiencing a difficult phase. The West was reported that Mike Tullberg was used again as coach of the team after Nuri Şahin was released. Under Tullberg's interim management, the U19 initially had a positive record with no defeat in three games. Nevertheless, the trip ended in the UEFA Youth League for Dortmund in the intermediate round.

On February 17, 2025, the U19 scored in a crucial game on Real Madrid. Dortmund won 2-1 in the league. However, this hurdle, which was re -established, was ultimately too big for the young Dortmund. In the sixteenth final, the team had to accept a 0-2 loss. n-tv emphasized that also scored in the previous encounter against the Dortmund U19 had already met.

Development of the U19

The Dortmund U19 qualified with a mixed result from the group phase: two victories, two draws and two defeats led to placement as table-18. In the main round of the DFB youth league, the team took fourth place after two games and at least reached the group without defeat in the preliminary round.

The defeat against Real Madrid was a hard setback in an already painful competition record. In the past ten years in the Youth League, the U19 of Borussia Dortmund has left a total of four times in the group phase, once in the round of 16 and twice in the quarter -finals. The current elimination in the sixteenth final means that the club has to give up the dream of the first international title again.

A look at the coaching careers

The UEFA Youth League, in which Dortmund once strived to have numerous successes, is a springboard for many coaches in international football. However, it is often evident that a title in this competition does not necessarily lead to a successful coaching career. Trainer such as Marco Rose, who triumphed with Red Bull Salzburg in 2016/2017, and Xavier García Pimienta, who won the trophy with FC Barcelona in 2017/2018, broke out different careers. Rose is active at RB Leipzig today, while Pimienta works in Seville.

This story is also a reminder for Borussia Dortmund, not only in the youth area, but at all levels of the association on the development. In the UEFA Youth League, the question remains whether the U19 can build on the successes of the past in the coming years or whether further painful setbacks are imminent.
