IGA 2027: Duisburg turns into a flowering garden metropolis!

On December 29, 2024, it became known that the construction of the International Garden Exhibition (IGA) in 2027 in Duisburg will begin in early 2025. The IGA, which is scheduled to open its gates in 2027, will take place in Duisburg highfeld on the Rhine and aims to win a million visitors. The IGA is the first of its kind in North Rhine-Westphalia and the metropolis Ruhr.

The preparations for the IGA take shape because the permits for two major projects have already arrived: the water law permit for the Kultushafen and the building permit for the Skywalk. The culture port is revitalized as a natural space on the water, while the Skywalk, which replaces the originally planned lookout tower, will offer a barrier -free view of the Rheinpark and the Rhine with a width of about 8 meters and a length of 50 meters. In addition, infrastructure measures are intended for electricity and supply routes in the park.

The IGA 2027 will offer a diverse program that includes flowering, plant exhibitions, cultural programs and symposia. The Duisburg businesses are responsible for the preparation and implementation of the IGA. In addition to the Kultushafen, a gastronomic offer is established. Other planned projects include a large playground and a stage place.

As part of the IGA, Duisburg urban development is also promoted. The city plans to use the IGA as an opportunity for regional and inter -municipal projects. The focus is on sustainable cooperation in the areas of open space development, environmental protection, mobility and climate silence. The urban development aims to replace the commercial and port use on the banks of the Rhine of Hochfeld and Wanheimerort and open the city towards the water. In addition, a continuous green networking along the right side of the Rhine is planned, which should connect the Rheinpark with the Kultushafen and the Wanheim Rhine promenade.

The IGA 2027 is organized by IGA gGmbH based in Essen. The main venue will be the Rheinpark in Duisburg, while the Nordsternpark in Gelsenkirchen and the Hansa coking plant are also integrated in Dortmund.
