Refunds for pensioners: This is how families benefit from new regulations!

pensioners in Germany who have young children can be happy: You will receive repayments due to too much paid care insurance contributions. The German Pension Insurance (DRV) announced on April 16, 2025 that these repayments will be implemented soon. The background is a decision by the Federal Constitutional Court from April 2022, which laid the basis for a new regulation. This will come into force from July 1, 2023.

Since this date, parents with at least two children under the age of 25 have to pay less for long -term care insurance. While childless pensioners have to pay 0.6 percent more, parents benefit from significant contribution relays. The new contribution rates ensure that young families are financially relieved.

contribution staggering and repayments

The DRV has implemented a digital procedure that automatically determines the number and age of the children. The contribution graduation looks as follows:

  • childless insured: 4.2 percent
  • insured with a child: 3.6 percent
  • Two children under the age of 25: 3.35 percent
  • Three children under the age of 25: 3.1 percent
  • Four children under the age of 25: 2.85 percent
  • Five or more children under 25 years: 2.6 percent

The repayments for too much paid contributions that have been incurred since July 2023 are expected to be charged with the pension payments in April and May 2025. For pensioners with two children who receive a monthly pension of 1,500 euros, this means a monthly saving of 3.75 euros and an annual saving of 45 euros. Refunds can be up to 135 euros for the past three years.

Special regulations for pensioners

For pensioners with four children, the monthly savings are even 11.25 euros, which results in a repayment of up to 405 euros over three years. In many cases, the DRV will automatically determine the required data, so that the pensioners do not have to apply. In doubt, especially for people who were born before January 1, 1940 or whose children are older than 25 years, it can make sense to submit evidence of the number of children.

The standard contributions to long -term care insurance are 3.6 percent, but these processes and changes are important, especially from the aspect that pensioners have to contribute their contributions to long -term care insurance alone. The DRV leads the contributions to the health insurance companies. In addition, voluntarily or privately health -insured pensioners are responsible for setting their contributions themselves.

For pensioners who receive several pensions, such as retirement pension or widow and widower's pension, a contribution is made for each type of pension. There are also regulations that are taken into account in deceased children.
