Strike chaos in Dortmund: garbage remains, citizens are frustrated!

In Dortmund, the current strike wave in public service is becoming increasingly obvious. The protests that take place at the same time concern not only waste disposal, but also essential services such as local public transport and the city administration. The dissatisfaction among the population is great, which is shown in a street survey by the "Ruhr Nachrichten". There, citizens express their frustration about the tense situation in the city.

Some citizens criticize the condition of the station area as a "catastrophe", while others indicate that Dortmund is not the cleanest city. This should also increase the frustration via the garbage collection strikes. A woman appeals to the employers to negotiate and grant wage increases. Another questioned emphasizes the importance of the employees of the waste disposal companies, while the unclear situation regarding the time and the possible results of further negotiations remains. Derwesten reports that the demands are represented in particular by the Verdi union.

comprehensive strike measures

The strikes in Dortmund affect various areas. According to Mayor Thomas Westphal, the negotiations between Verdi and the municipal employers are untransported and require quick solutions. "We have made many important areas in Dortmund," said Westphal. These include:

  • City administration (including orders, green space and civil engineering)
  • DSW21 (public transport)
  • EDG (garbage disposal, recycling centers closed)
  • Clinic Dortmund
  • Sparkasse Dortmund
  • Städtische senior homes
  • lwl Klinik Dortmund
  • Jobcenter Dortmund
  • Theater Dortmund
  • Kitas (approx. 50 out of 100 daycare centers completely strike)
  • school caretaker (impairments in school operations)
  • Traffic monitoring and local regulatory service (violations remain unpunished)

On March 12th, employees across North Rhine-Westphalia were called for a full-day warning strike. Verdi puts extensive claims on the table for the 2.5 million employees. These include a wage increase of 8 % or at least 350 euros per month, three additional free days per year and an increase in training allowances. Westphal does not consider these demands to be complex and argues that the additional expenses are already planned in the households.

emergency agreement and future prospects

Despite the tense situation, there are efforts to make an emergency agreement between the EDG and the unions to ensure basic waste disposal. Westphal appeals to employers to complete the negotiations quickly to avoid further problems. "There are no fundamental obstacles to an agreement," said the mayor.

The public remains excited about developments in the negotiations. In view of the concern of numerous service areas in Dortmund, a quick solution to the problems is not only for employees, but also for citizens.
