Strike wave in Dortmund: garbage disposal and daycare centers affected!
Dortmund is currently experiencing a wave of strikes in the public service, which has increasingly noticeable effects on various urban services. Mayor Thomas Westphal, a member of the SPD, has been dissatisfied with the current negotiations between the Verdi union and the municipal employers. He criticizes the negotiations as "unobricated" and criticizes the long duration, while Dortmund suffers from the consequences of the strike. The garbage disposal and other urban services are particularly affected, which leads to a significant burden for citizens.
The strikes concern a large number of institutions in Dortmund, including the city administration, DSW21 (Stadtwerke Dortmund), EDG (Dortmund disposal), the Dortmund Clinic, the Sparkasse Dortmund, city senior homes as well as theater and daycare centers of the city's company Fabido. The focus is particularly on the EDG, which does not carry out a garbage disposal during the warning strike from March 9th to 11th and whose recycling centers are closed. Part of the urban services, such as the regulatory office and the green area office, also remains unreachable for days, which means considerable restrictions for the population.
The demands of the union
Verdi demands an increase of wage of 8 percent or at least 350 euros per month for around 2.5 million employees in the public service. In addition, the union demands three additional days off a year and the introduction of a flexible working time account. The training allowances and internship fees are also to be increased by 200 euros per month. Westphal sees the wage claims as "not complicated" and underlines that the necessary additional expenses are already planned in the municipal households.
The strike actions were organized by Verdi in response to the insufficient offers of employers and the urgent needs of employees. On March 12th there was a large -scale rally on the Dortmund Friedensplatz, in which around 5,000 participants occurred for their rights. Verdi chairman Frank Werneke in this context expressed his annoyance of the lack of offers of the employer and pointed out that negotiations for over 2.5 million employees of the federal and municipalities will begin on March 14, 2025 in Potsdam.
During the strike, the garbage disposal in Dortmund will fail until Thursday, March 11th. However, the EDG has completed an emergency service agreement with the unions to ensure that waste disposal in social facilities such as hospitals and old people's homes will continue to be maintained. The return of unusual empties should take place from Monday, March 13th, and the residents are required to ensure their access to waste containers.
effects on the city and communication with the population
The effects of the strike can also be clearly felt in the everyday life of the citizens. For example, many daycare centers of the Fabido company, around 50 out of 100, remain completely closed on March 12, while the rest are only partially strike. Restrictions can also be expected in school and traffic surveillance. Westphal warned of the collection of garbage as immediate consequences of these strikes, which ultimately had to be removed. He appealed to the employer side to quickly get a solution in the negotiations to improve the garbage situation in Dortmund.
summarized Dortmund is currently facing a difficult situation that affects both the culture of life and public services. The lack of clear negotiation results has led to an increase in strike activities that extend over different areas of the city and will certainly remain noticeable in the coming days.
