Strike disposal company: Dortmund starts impressive cleanup!
in Dortmund has been considerable restrictions in the waste disposal industry since March 10, 2025, since the employees of Disposal Dortmund GmbH (EDG) have resigned during a multi -day strike. The unions ver.di and komba organize the protests and aim to draw attention to the precarious working conditions in the industry.
The strike takes until at least March 14 and has led to the emptying of the gray residual waste bins and the biotons in the entire city. Logically, this situation has an impact on waste disposal in the region, since all recycling courtyards and the furniture exchange remained closed during the strike. Only the recycling center and the Dortmund recycling center remained open, while the landfill northeast works in emergency operation, which leads to further delays.
back to normal on Sunday
The EDG has now announced that the city will be cleaned up again on Sunday, March 16. On this day, the staff will be increased to 28 employees, which represents a significant increase compared to the usual two employees on Sundays. This increase is intended to help the road cleaning and emptying of public trash can be carried out more, especially in the city center and the pedestrian zones. The employees start at 7 a.m.
From Monday, March 17th, the garbage disposal will then work regularly for organic and residual waste. However, it is pointed out that the strikes' unusual garbage cans are not released. Instead, the citizens have to wait until the next regular disposal date to get their garbage cans emptied. In addition, EDG will take extra rubbish in a limited extent in closed sacks or paper bags, but bulky waste remains excluded.
acute challenges in the industry
The strikes are a clear sign of the challenges with which employees are faced with the field of waste disposal. According to a current study, it shows that 92% of companies in the energy industry have difficulty filling vacancies. This increase by 29% within a year reflects the urgent need for action to keep and win qualified specialists. The employees suffer from work compression and vacant positions, which, as Christoph Schmitz-Detlefsen from ver.di, emphasizes, can endanger the quality of the services for citizens.
The strike aims to improve working conditions for employees with a more attractive collective agreement and thus ensure the quality of waste disposal in the long term. The effects of the current protests are clearly noticeable - even if direct effects on the citizens were initially not to be expected, the current situation shows how quickly framework conditions can change in the waste disposal industry.
