Full closure of the A1: Leverkusen's new bridge ensures chaos in traffic!
from April 4 at 10 p.m. to April 7th at 5 a.m., the A1 between the Leverkusen-West and Leverkusen motorway junction is completely blocked in both directions. These measures are necessary to work on the new Rhine bridge in Leverkusen. The rga Long -distance transport is recommended to bypass the Leverkusen area. For the nearby area, the Rhine ferry between Leverkusen-Hitdorf and Cologne-Langel is offered as an alternative that is operated from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.
Current diversion information for the affected route is of central importance. Road users in the direction of Dortmund must be derived from the Kreuz Leverkusen-West to the A59 towards Düsseldorf. From there it goes via the A59 to the Düsseldorf-Süd triangle before they are diverted to the A46 to the Wuppertal-Nord triangle and finally to the A1 towards Dortmund. For the direction of travel Koblenz, the derivation is also carried out from the Kreuz Leverkusen to the A59, with a detour via the Leverkusen-Rheindorf junction before the return trip to the A1 is possible.
previous closures and traffic situation
There were significant restrictions on this route before. According to adac , the A1 was also fully closed between the same motorway junctions from January 19 to February 4, 2024. This first block led to massive traffic problems, since alternative routes such as the A3, A4 and A59 were overloaded, which resulted in kilometers of traffic jams. In the first week, the number of hours around Cologne tripled considerably.
The release of the first part of the new Rheinbrücke can be viewed as a bright spot. The ADAC emphasizes that the bridge can now be accessed for truck again after it was closed for years due to overloads and thus also by a traffic light system. The new building is aimed at a even traffic management, with the old, overloaded structures to be torn down. Nevertheless, a Staufreier Cologne motorway ring is not to be expected.
New construction concept for the Rheinbrücke
The new Rhine bridge consists of two sub -structures arranged in parallel. The first part is to be connected to the A1 by February 4, 2024. After approval, three narrow lanes are available in the direction of Koblenz/Trier. There are also new regulations on the Leverkusen bridge: there are no more barriers, the lanes are narrowed by yellow lines, a speed limit of 80 km/h has been introduced, and an overtaking ban for trucks and buses applies.
For the future work on the bridge, the beginning of the second new building for 2025 is scheduled, with a planned completion by the end of 2027. This measure aims to relieve the traffic volume sustainably and to create safe conditions for all road users.
