Wolf new in the Eifel: Rureifel becomes an official wolf area!
The State Environment Agency of North Rhine-Westphalia (Lanuv) has shown a new wolf area called "Rureifel" in the Aachen region and the district of Düren. This decision was made because a female wolf between Hürtgenwald and Simmerath is demonstrably sedentary. Genetic evidence proves that the animal was in the region for at least half a year over 2024.
The wolf comes from an adjacent wolf pack near the Belgian border and was probably born in 2023. The determination of wolf areas is important for pasture holders because it enables state support for protective fences. For years, measures to protect herds have been promoted in the Eifel, near the Belgian border.
genetic evidence and distribution
The genetic evidence for the presence of the wolf in the Rureifel is based on traces of faith, hair and examinations of killed animals. In addition, wolves in North Rhine-Westphalia have been detected in other regions, including the Märkische Kreis, Schermbeck, the twilight forest/üfter Mark on the Lower Rhine, Haltern and Leuscheid on the border with Rhineland-Palatinate, as well as TAG24 was reported.
The current measures for the expulsion of the wolf area and the knowledge about the sedentary nature of the wolf are integral components of herd protection in the region, which is supported by government funding.
