114 million euros for hospitals: Laumann announces funding!
On April 1, 2025, Minister of Health Karl-Josef Laumann in Düsseldorf hands over new funding notices of around 114 million euros to several hospitals to several hospitals in North Rhine-Westphalia. These funds are specifically intended for the implementation of the new hospital plan, which has been structured according to quality and accessibility requirements. This is viewed as part of the second round of funding from a total of around 2.5 billion euros, which will be provided for the hospitals during this election period.
The funding is gradually paid by 2030 and is based on the construction progress of the respective hospital projects. As early as 2024, eight hospitals received funding notices of around 409 million euros. Thus, there is a funding of around 2 billion euros, which are provided for further necessary structural changes and investments.
funding purposes and specific projects
The funded measures include a large number of projects that are intended to significantly improve health care in the region. The most important projects include:
- Clinic Lippe in Bad Salzuflen: 17.8 million euros for the construction of the new child and adolescent psychiatry.
- LWL-Klinik Dortmund: 4.1 million euros for the construction of an acute station for child and adolescent psychiatry.
- Duisburger Helios Clinics: 5.4 million euros for structural measures for restructuring at the St. Anna Clinic.
- GFO Clinics Mettmann-Süd: 86.7 million euros for the extension and renovation at the St. Josefs Hospital Hilden.
- Agaplesion Clinic Hagen: 82.9 million euros for the renovation and expansion, including emergency room and intensive care units.
The funds come from the hospital structural fund, 51 % being provided by the health insurance companies and 49 % by the state of North Rhine-Westphalia. The aim of this extensive investment program is to sustainably improve health care in North Rhine-Westphalia and to ensure high-quality, patient-friendly care.
background and regulations
The new hospital structure law, which comes into force on April 1, 2025, provides for transition periods for certain performance groups until December 31, 2025. Since the introduction of the law on strengthening nursing staff in 2019, several initiatives to improve hospital care have been initiated. The aim is to further increase the quality and economy of patient care.
In addition, the Hospital Future Act extends the term of the hospital structural fund by December 31, 2024, whereby the middle height remains unchanged. The state of North Rhine-Westphalia has anchored 95 million euros annually in the budget for the years 2019 to 2022. Another concern is to promote cooperative cooperation between the hospital providers and the health insurance companies in order to increase efficiency in healthcare.
