The future of hospital care in NRW: Minister Laumann speaks!

On Wednesday, April 9, 2025, an important event will take place in Marien Hospital Herne, which focuses on the future of Catholic hospital operators in North Rhine-Westphalia. Health Minister Karl-Josef Laumann will speak there at 10:00 a.m. on the subject of "future prospects of the Catholic hospital operators in NRW in the reflection of hospital planning and hospital structure reforms". The Cura according to the investment company, a non -profit organization of the Archdiocese of Paderborn, organizes the meeting. Since its foundation in 1984, Cura has the goal of promoting their investment companies in the area of hospitals and elderly care facilities, such as Land.nrw explained.

The legal changes in hospital planning that came into force on April 1, 2025 are a central topic. In Düsseldorf, the results of a six -year planning process were presented, which was initiated by Minister Laumann and actors in the hospital landscape. The new hospital plan should not only enable structural changes in the North Rhine-Westphalian hospital landscape, but also ensure the quality of the supply and emergency care. In addition, the plan aims to reduce the competition for cases and personnel and reduce double and multiple reservations, as Mags.nrw reports.

Financial support and important key figures

For the implementation of the new regulations, around 2.5 billion euros from the state of North Rhine-Westphalia are available. This financing is crucial to ensure qualitative and needs -based hospital care. Dirk Ruiss from the VDEK state representation NRW emphasizes the importance of this planning. An example of the desired changes is shown in the endoprosthetics: only an assignment of 136 of 214 applications was granted, which corresponds to a decrease of 36 %.

  • endoprosthetics knee: 214 applications, 136 assignments (minus 36%)
  • endoprosthetics hip: 236 applications, 137 assignments (minus 42%)
  • Treatment of liver cancer: 113 applications, 29 assignments (minus 74%)
  • Treatment of esophageal cancer: 71 applications, 26 assignments (minus 63%)
  • Interventional cardiology: 165 applications, 141 assignments (minus 15%)

Especially in the area of psychiatric and psychosomatic care, applications were granted in full. The state government has already awarded 409 million euros to eight hospitals, and additional 2.1 billion euros will be made available in the coming years.

The event in the Marien Hospital not only offers an outlook on the future of Catholic hospitals, but is also an important part of ongoing reforms in health care in North Rhine-Westphalia. The press work of the Cura is coordinated by Ms. Meike Jänsch, which can be reached for inquiries on 02921 3274061 or by email at m.jaensch@conversiopr.de.
