School chaos in Remscheid: Over 1000 children fight for training positions!

in Remscheid, a worrying situation for primary schools is emerging. Families in all four districts have to prepare for the possibility of cancellations in school registration. Markus Eschweiler, a representative of the school office, reported to the school committee about the current status. In particular, the primary schools in Hasten, Walther-Hartmann, Freiherr-vom-Stein and Eisernstein, all of which are forced to reject applications. In the coming school year, 1070 children will have to prepare for their school career, while 45 children whose registrations have so far have to be contacted. This is a significant decline compared to the previous year when 1189 registrations.

The primary school on the city park plans to set up an additional class to meet the increasing demands. In addition, the Honsberg primary school is reactivated and receives the necessary “retrospective measures”. These developments illustrate the pressure to act under which the schools are.

challenges in student care

A central problem is the possible reproduction of children classified in classes 1 and 2. Here, teacher Sebastian Hill warns of the consequences. Recommendations can be done at the request of the parents or on the teachers' proposal. School councilor Heike Adolf points out that the restrictions caused by Corona have lacked significant basic skills in some children, which makes it difficult to start school. It is particularly worrying that numerous children have not visited a daycare center before their school start, which can lead to linguistic difficulties.

The increased number of registrations and the resulting full classes also make it more difficult to repeat a class. Schools could face legal consequences if they are denied. Parents whose children are rejected could also take legal action, which the already tense situation continues to complain. Communication with the parents is difficult because they often have unclear information about school places and transfers.

teacher care and their consequences

Another problem area is the teacher supply in Remscheid. This is not considered a preferred place of work for many teachers, which is why more frequent attitudes take place in Düsseldorf. Nevertheless, Remscheid receives teachers through delegations, which keeps the current supply stable. However, this positive situation could change quickly. So -called "adhesive effects", such as the delegation of a teacher from Wuppertal to Remscheid, try to defuse the situation at short notice.

The legal framework for schooling is clearly defined. According to Section 35 (1) SchulG, the compulsory schooling for children who have reached the sixth year of life begins on August 1 of the same calendar year. Children born on October 1 are not affected by this regulation. Registrations for primary school must be made in the autumn of the previous year by November 15 at the latest. Parents are entitled to a place in the nearest primary school, provided there are capacities, and the school management makes the decision on admission based on the school entrance observation and school medical report.

These situations and regulations illustrate the necessary need for adaptation in the school system of Remscheid. The path to a stable educational landscape will be shaped by numerous challenges that need to be mastered.
