Var premiere in the Bundesliga: Referee explains decisions on the microphone!

In German football, a significant step was taken towards more transparency. Robin Braun, a 28-year-old referee from Wuppertal, emerged in Bundesliga history by addressing the very first Var Stadium announcement during a game. This premiere took place on February 3, 2025 when Bayer Leverkusen competed against TSG Hoffenheim and the game was decided 3-1 in favor of Leverkusen, as rga.de reported.

In the 23rd minute Braun, Braun initially whistled a penalty for Bayer Leverkusen after Nathan Tella was fouled in the penalty area. However, the decision was withdrawn after consulting the video assistant Robert Schröder because Tella was in an off-the-sided position. Braun explained to the disappointed viewer about the stadium microphone: "The scene was checked, in the opinion of the pictures it was offside, so the decision: no penalty, offside," informs rp-online.de.

a new chapter in football

The introduction of the VAR announcements is part of a test run that is carried out in nine stadiums. The test is intended to demonstrate how referees can understand their decisions during the game. So far, these announcements have not yet been made in the previous four matches of the first and second league, which gives the DFB's test balloon of special importance. Robin Braun thus celebrated his third assignment in the Bundesliga with this historical announcement.

The aim of this measure is to give the viewers more insight into the decisions of the referees and how the video assistant (VAR) works. Braun expressed itself positively about the smooth running of the announcement and hoped that it offered fans added value. "The new method was implemented accident-free", reported n-tv.de Next.

background of the referee

Robin Braun, who took off his Abitur at the Leibniz High School in Remscheid in 2014, is not only active as a referee. After studying law at the Heinrich Heine University in Düsseldorf, he completed in 2019 and completed his legal trainee at the Wuppertal district court. In addition to his referee activity, in which he has profiled himself heavily in the recent past, he was also a student representative at his school. This versatile training and its commitment in the health sector give its function as a referee an additional weight.

The introduction of this pilot project, which is based on the model of the US football league NFL, comprises a total of 67 games until the end of the season. This represents an innovative approach to make the decisions of the Var, often perceived as non -transparent.
