Future of local transport: New S-Bahn lines combine Cologne and Düsseldorf!

On March 21, 2025, the result of a comprehensive feasibility study on S-Bahn traffic was presented in the main committee of the GO.Rheinland purpose association as part of the 2040 target network. This study, commissioned by the GO.Rheinland and the Rhein-Ruhr transport association (VRR), shows a clear plan for the future expansion of the rail network in North Rhine-Westphalia. The experts from the Spiekermann office have worked out a preferred variant that provides for a link between the S-Bahn lines S 17 and S 1 in Opladen.

The S1 will in future drive to Opladen every half hour, while the S17, which is already running in Cologne-Mülheim, is expanded every 20 minutes to Opladen. This enables a smooth change between the two lines on the same platform in Opladen. A new direct connection from the Leverkusen area towards Düsseldorf Hauptbahnhof and Düsseldorf Airport is also created.

necessary construction work

Significant structural changes are required for the implementation of these measures. These include:

  • The establishment of a third track between Cologne-Mülheim and Solingen.
  • The construction of an additional bridge in Cologne-Mülheim for the threading of the S 17.
  • The creation of four new stops: Cologne-Höhenhaus, Cologne-Dünnwald, Leverkusen-Morsbroich and Solingen Landwehr.

The feasibility study was created with financial support from the municipalities of Cologne and Leverkusen and the Rheinisch-Bergische Kreis. The next step in this process will be the coordination with the State Transport Ministry and DB Infrago AG. On the other hand, the time and details of the project are still unclear.

room analysis for the Revierbahn-West

The planned route is anchored in the Kohleregions (InvKG) investment law and aims to improve the connection of settlement areas in the Düsseldorf - Grevenbroich - Bedburg/Bergheim - Jülich - Aachen region. An integrative approach also includes the early participation of stakeholders and the implementation of benefit-costs analyzes. The construction should be electrified and create a powerful rail infrastructure that benefits both economic development and structural change. The estimated value of the study is 800,000 euros without VAT.

focus on sustainable mobility

As part of the traffic turnaround, a pilot project was launched under the name of Kraftraum shuttle in early 2023. This project is a cooperation between the city of Bergheim, the Rhein-Sieg Verkehrsverbund (VRS), the Rhein-Erft-Kreis and the Rhein-Erft-Verkehrsgesellschaft mbH (REVG). The initiative aims to create a public, inter-municipal and scalable platform for on-demand traffic. The real operation of the platform in Bergheim starts in November 2024, while the driving service in the rural municipalities of Titz and Rommerskirchen will start in February 2025.

The shuttle vehicles used are barrier-free and use electric drives, which promotes a local emission-free mobility. These developments make the endeavor not only to expand the infrastructure in the Rhineland, but also to make sustainable and future -proof

Overall, the recent announcements and projects in the area of rail transport in NRW show a clear positive trend that is supposed to benefit both commuters and the regional economy.
