100 days until the world student games: Duisburg in the spotlight!

In 100 days, on July 16, 2025, the world student games, officially known as the FISU World University Games, will be opened in Duisburg. This event is one of the largest multi -sports events in the world, only exceeded by the Olympics and the Paralympics. Around 8,500 athletes from over 150 countries are expected to fight for medals in various disciplines.

The games that are organized every two years by the International University Sports Association FISU are aimed at young students between the ages of 18 and 25. These games are more than just a competition; They are considered a springboard for talented athletes who dream of participating in the Olympic Games. This year, Germany, as an organizer, offers the unique opportunity to present the talent of young athletes to a global audience.

torch passport and first stages

A special highlight of the games is the torch, which was lit in Turin in January 2025. She will travel through Germany and pass various stations before you ceremoniously arrive at the opening ceremony in North Rhine-Westphalia (NRW). The first wearer of the torch is the hip-hop world champion Stella Richter. This symbolic gesture is a tribute to the tradition of the Olympic Games and underlines the spirit of international friendship.

The competitions take place in several cities, including Bochum, Duisburg, Hagen, Mülheim an der Ruhr, Essen and Berlin. The opening ceremony will be held in the MSV Duisburg stadium, while a final concert with the band Deichkind is planned in the Duisburg-Nord landscape park on July 27th

The summer edition of the World University Games includes a variety of disciplines. The festive sports include badminton, basketball, archery, fencing, gymnastics, judo, athletics, rhythmic sports exercises, swimming, taekwondo, tennis, table tennis, volleyball, water polo and water jumping. The participants are selected by their national associations, and not only young performance athletes, but also established top athletes travel to NRW.

The first round of nomination took place in early April, in which 16 participants, including the athlete Margarita Kolosov, were selected. Tickets are available from 13 euros, and some events are also offered free of charge.

political dimension and cultural supporting program

The importance of this event goes beyond sport. NRW Prime Minister Hendrik Wüst describes the games as a dress rehearsal for possible Olympic acquisitions for the years 2036 or 2040. In addition to sporting competitions, an extensive cultural and entertainment program is offered, which also includes concerts. This mixture of sport and culture is intended to help address a wide audience and to strengthen the sense of community.
