Duisburg's dilapidated Siemens headquarters: demolition instead of daycare!

The former Siemens headquarters in Duisburg highfeld has experienced a regrettable decline in recent years. Known as "Lost Place", the building has been empty for some time and is a nuisance for the neighbors. These complain about the poor condition of the property, which is drawn by grapped windows and graffiti. The city of Duisburg, which once had plans for a comprehensive use of the building, was now forced to give it up, as darwesten.de It was originally intended to transform the ground floor and the first floor into a daycare center, while the upper floors were to serve as office space. Adjacent should be a playground for the little ones. However, these plans failed due to reality. A feasibility study showed that the conversion is much more time -consuming than previously thought. The estimated renovation costs were at least 23 million euros well above the originally planned 700,000 euros.

demolition plans and redesign

In view of the missing tenants for the old Siemens administration,

finally made the decision to tear down the building. The aim of the city of Duisburg is to create a cultural and sporting offer on the vacant area that is available in good time for the International Garden Exhibition (IGA) in spring 2027.

In the context of this transformation, there is also an international, interdisciplinary realization competition based on the 2013 RPW. The competition aims to develop a sustainable freedom planning concept for the future garden "Rheinpark and connection" in the IGA event year, as duisburg.de

competition and long -term goals

The focus is on the exhibition area that is subject to entry in the Rheinpark site. The results of the competition are intended to advance the further development of the district and improve the connection to the Rhine. An essential element of the concept consists of structural-investive measures that remain in the long term and sustainably upgrade the location. In addition, it is planned to create temporary exhibition content that contribute to the attractiveness of the location during the IGA 2027, but are largely dismantled after the event.

The project modules include the Rheinpark with a temporary exhibition building and a water tower, the green ring, the Bonifatiusplatz, the Kultushafen and various temporary mobility measures. The links between existing and new structures as well as the ecological framework, which were determined in an ecological preliminary examination, are particularly taken into account. The main goals are the integration of existing highlights, the protection of the visual axes to the Rhine and the opening of the Rhine to Duisburg.

Overall, the city of Duisburg is striving to create a sustainable basic structure with a high level of stay and leisure quality. The future of the high field is therefore linked to the design and development of a new cultural center, which should address both the citizens and the visitors of the IGA.
