Cycling in danger: Defects in Duisburg's bike paths uncovered!
In autumn 2024, the ADFC Duisburg carried out a comprehensive survey to evaluate the state of the cycling infrastructure in Duisburg. The aim was to get a clear picture of the defects and challenges from everyday cycling. A total of 51 people took part in the survey and submitted 135 reports on a questionnaire or online, which came from all urban districts, with the exception of Walsum.
The results clearly show that road construction in Duisburg is inadequate in many ways. The most common defects concern the insufficient nature of the bike paths and their frequent interruptions. 43 reports reported on cycle paths in poor condition, which are often unusable due to increasing vehicles or overgrown areas. In 22 cases, structural defects and complete bike path gaps were also criticized. The poor condition of the road surface was mentioned by 10 participants, with similar concerns in traffic routing being expressed, since 12 reports indicated inadequate protection for cyclists on busy roads.
special complaints and danger spots
Special dangers and defects were reported from different districts. In this way, reports from Rheinhausen show that protective strips are used by motor vehicles despite a speed limit of 30 km/h. In Meiderich, the bike path ends abruptly on a sidewalk that is too narrow for cyclists and has no warning signs for drivers. The life -threatening state of the roundabout in Ruhrort also ensures uncertainty among the cyclists.
The survey also covered symptoms about bicycle -unfriendly traffic lights and lack of safe storage options. In particular, the districts in the south, such as Düsseldorfer Straße and Sittardsberger Allee, are negative. Numerous symptoms were loud at intersections and circular reversals, such as in Grunewald and the Ruhrort roundabout.
future perspective
The evaluation of this survey is strategic for the ADFC in Duisburg. It is planned to visit the reported defects at the relevant places on site. A consolidated list of the defects found should then be handed over to the city administration and the political leadership, accompanied by the demand for immediate measures in particularly dangerous bodies and a comprehensive plan to improve the cycling infrastructure.
In addition, bicycle friendliness in German cities is currently assessed as part of the ADFC bicycle climate tests . The test extends from September to November 2024 and will be evaluated in spring 2025. Previous surveys show that there is still an urgent need for improvements to the cycling infrastructure.
A Europe -wide study on traffic safety, Urban Road Safety Index 2024, confirms this concern. While German cities are mostly certain in a European comparison, the condition of the bike paths remains behind the expectations. DetailsQuellen
