Duisburg, a city with a rich story, is not only known for its important steel sector, but also for its cultural treasures. Under these, the Haus Böckum emerged, a historic water lock that is now for sale. This impressive building is located in the Huckingen district, near the A59, and based on the Angerbach.
The Böckum house is the only surviving water lock in Duisburg. It was first mentioned in 1345. The name "Böckum" refers to "Hof Zo den Buechen", which indicates a former beech forest. Over the centuries, the castle was seated by numerous noble families before it went into the possession of the Count of Spee in the 19th century.

The water lock is not only an architectural jewel, but also a contemporary testimony. The facility was built in several construction phases, with the oldest section, a brick tower, was built as a manor house in 1661. Other parts date from the 18th and 19th centuries and were used for agriculture until 2008. The entire living space of the castle is 2,770 square meters, the property comprises generous 28,854 square meters.
Despite its historical value, the listed building urgently needs renovations. Damage to vandalism is evident and the city of Duisburg has initiated an regulatory procedure due to the expiry of the property. As early as 2017, a Berlin investor received approval to convert the castle into modern apartments, conservative plans provided for the creation of 14 luxurious residential units, including five row houses. So far, however, there are no progress.
future of the property
In 2012, the investor acquired the property with the vision to transform it into a modern residential complex. But the hoped -for progress failed to materialize. Finally, in February 2017, a poultry stable burned down on the site, which further tightened the worrying situation. The castle grounds are currently fenced and access is prohibited.
Haus Böckum is not only regarded as a fascinating listed building, but also as an essential part of Duisburg's cultural identity. The city can look back on a long story that was shaped by Romans and kings. In view of the current situation and the importance of the castle, it is crucial that potential buyers use the opportunity to preserve this cultural heritage. Visitors and historians are to be hoped that the plans for renovation and use will soon be put into practice.
