Full closure of the Rheinbrücke Beeckerwerth: traffic jams and diversions threaten!

Current traffic problems in the Ruhr area concern not only the Rheinbrücke Beeckerwerth on the A42, but also another important connection, the A42 between Bottrop and Essen. The full closure of the Rhine bridge on the A42 started on Friday, May 9, 2025, and is scheduled to continue until Monday morning. This measure is necessary to carry out tests on the carrying cables of the bridge. The affected section lies between the Duisburg-Baerl and Duisburg-Beeck junction, which severely limits both private transport and heavy goods traffic.

drivers have to expect significant disabilities. Depirtions are set up that lead over parallel Rhine crossings such as the A40, A42 and A57. However, traffic jams and waiting times are also expected on these diversion routes. The city of Duisburg asks road users to bypass the area in large numbers to reduce the traffic load. This is particularly important because the situation was already tense before the lock.

expanded closures and their consequences

In parallel to this block, road users must expect further restrictions on the A42 between Bottrop and Essen. This route has been fully blocked in both directions since December 11, 2023. The blocking was originally planned for just six days, but was extended until spring 2024 due to considerable damage to the bridge over the Rhein-Herne Canal. Cracks have been found in the bridge, which is why a new building is necessary.

The Westfalen motorway is currently carrying out maintenance work to ensure security during traffic. After completing the work, the bridge should initially be released for vehicles up to 3.5 tons. In order to avoid traffic chaos in Bottrop and Essen, far -reaching diversions were set up via the A2, A3, A40 and A45 motorways. Drivers from the west are advised to use the A3 and then switch to the A2 or A40, while drivers should take the A45 to the west from the direction of the east.

insight into the infrastructure problems

The bridge over the Rhein-Herne Canal, which was built in 1970, is 302 meters long and 31 meters wide. It was originally designed for a daily burden of around 85,000 vehicles, but has not been justice for years and is under constant observation. The city of Essen plans to optimize the inner -city diversion routes, especially at the intersection of Birdheimer Straße and Gladbecker Straße. By mid -January 2024, various optimization options for the diversions are to be checked and implemented in order to defuse the traffic situation.

Another important step will be a special meeting of the traffic committee in the state parliament on January 17, 2024. Representatives of the Federal Ministry of Transport, Autobahn GmbH, the district government of Münster and the State Office of Straße.nrw will take part in the current challenges and future measures to advise 24rhein .
