Large alarm exercise in Hattingen: fire brigade and emergency services in action!

On March 29, 2025, a comprehensive alarm exercise took place in Hattingen, which was carried out by several organizations of the region's emergency services and fire departments. The exercise started on time at 11 a.m. and attracted numerous onlookers and fire brigade spotters.

The venue was the picturesque Ruhr meadows. A total of around 230 operations and rescue workers were involved in the exercise. The organizations included the Hattingen fire brigade, the emergency services of the Ennepe-Ruhr district, the ELW2 of the Ennepe-Ruhr district, the IUK EN, the DLRG Hattingen Mitte/Blankenstein and South as well as the THW Hattingen. The scenarios were supplemented by accident actors to create realistic conditions.

involved and organization of the exercise

The exercise had several areas of application, including the Hattingen military facility, parts of the Leinpfad and the streets on Wallbaum and Königsteiner Straße. Jens Herkströter, the press spokesman for the Hattingen fire brigade, and Thomas Neumann, the head of operations of the emergency services of the Ennepe-Ruhr district, took a first record of the exercise in front of the camera. For this purpose, photos and film posts were also published that documented the different scenarios and the cooperation of the emergency services.

Another important event took place in parallel to the alarm exercise, which was organized for the emergency doctors in the Ennepe-Ruhr district. A total of 14 emergency doctors took part in further training, which focused on technical rescues from vehicles and from great altitude. The training was organized together by the emergency services and fire brigade and took place in the fire service equipment house Niedersprockhövel.

training for emergency doctors

The participants of the training also included volunteer firefighters from the Niedersprockhövel fire truck and employees of the Falck rescue station from Hattingen-Bredenscheid. After a theoretical introduction, practical exercises followed in which two emergency doctors took over the role of the accident and experienced the technical rescue from the patient's perspective.

The exercise was used, among other things, hydraulic rescue scissors, and the rescue options from a greater height were practiced using a turntable ladder. The entire unit was designed by Frank Welling and André Winkelhardt from the Sprockhövel fire brigade, the support of Kai Pohl, the medical director of the emergency services of the Ennepe-Ruhr district.

These exercises and advanced training are essential in order to optimally prepare the emergency services for the emergency and to constantly improve the operational tactics. The reporting on such events shows the great operational and professionalism of the emergency services in the region.
