Art event City occupation in Hattingen: Art conquers public space!

The city of Hattingen is preparing for a creative enrichment of public space by exhibiting art in urban areas from May 3, 2025. The project, which operates under the title "City Placement", aims to set artistic impulses in three symbolic places within the city. The central sculpture "Living Room" by the artist Dorothee Bielfeld will be in focus, which invites you to rediscover the perception of landscape and water. The opening of the positive artistic event will take place on May 3 at 5 p.m. on the Untermarkt, where Mayor Dirk Glaser will herald the event together with the dancer Marcela Ruiz Quintero.

This art project is funded by the Ministry of Culture and Science in the State of North Rhine-Westphalia and pursues the motto "Openness. Encounter. Communication.". The aim is to create open situations for artistic viewing and interaction with the audience. The events are designed in such a way that they bring art directly to people and are not dependent on museums or galleries.

diverse events and schedule

The period of the exhibition extends from May 3 to July 8, 2025 and includes a number of additional events. On May 24th to June 12th, 2025, the sculpture will be on the market square in Blankenstein. In addition, on June 6th at 5 p.m. and 7 p.m. there will be a Walkact entitled "Space Tourists", presented by the Duo Diagonal during the butter bread. The Ruhrwiese becomes the scene of the art installation from June 14 to July 8, 2025.

  • 3. May - July 8, 2025: "Living Room" on the Untermarkt
  • 24. May - June 12, 2025: Marktplatz Blankenstein
  • 6. June 2025: Walkact "Space Tourists"
  • 14. June - July 8, 2025: Ruhrwiese
  • 4. July 2025: After work party

These events aim to actively involve the citizens in the creative process and to sharpen the perception of urban areas through art. The question is on how art and interaction can transform our perception of places. The initiators hope to offer new food for thought through the artistic interventions and to discuss the importance of public space for history, art and society.

The importance of art in public space

The concept of city cast is not unique, but also takes place in other cities. For example, in Berlin Book, attempts are made to make awareness of the importance of such designs through walks and works of art in public space. This approach shows how art in urban space can not only fulfill aesthetic but also social functions by conveying historical knowledge and artistic attempts at design.

in Hattingen this concept is now also implemented in order to motivate citizens to participate and to strengthen the role of art as a link between man and the surrounding area. The art project invites everyone interested to rediscover the city and its design and to deal with art in public space.

For the city of Hattingen, the “City Completion” project marks an important step in the interaction between art, population and urban design. Radio Ennepe Ruhr reports that the event makes the urban space tangible and wants to stimulate creative appropriation.

In addition, organizers and sponsors, such as the Alfried Krupp von Bohlen and Halbach Foundation, support the realization of this project, which aims to bring art into everyday life and create encounters.
