Ruhrverband is investing 15 million in green energy: solar offensive started!

The Ruhrverband announced on January 8, 2025 to further promote energy neutrality. In the course of a comprehensive photovoltaic offensive, the association plans to set up large solar systems on a total of eight sewage treatment plants, including Hattingen. An investment amount of up to 15 million euros is planned for the implementation of this Initiative.

At the sewage treatment plant in Hattingen, solar panels are to be installed on a 24,000 square meter open space. The approval procedure is currently in preparation, while construction will be sought for the third quarter of 2026. The Ruhrverband can already report in 2024 that it generated more regenerative energy in the second year in a row.

sustainable energy production

In addition, it was found that the Ruhrverband is energy -neutral. This positive balance is regarded as a clear contribution to climate protection and to reduce ongoing energy train costs. In the next two years, the required PV open space systems will be built at the corresponding sewage treatment plants.

The goal of the Ruhrverband is to be energetic not only in the annual balance sheet, but every quarter of the year. The continuous improvement of the cleaning performance of the sewage treatment plants has already meant that almost all waters in the Ruhr catchment area have good or very good condition. The membership fees that are based on benefits develop moderately in 2025 despite an increasingly difficult economic environment. The increase in wastewater treatment is 3.4 percent, while water supply is increased by 2.4 percent.
