Witkoff and Putin: Negotiations on Peace in Ukraine in progress!

On April 25, 2025, the US specialist Steve Witkoff met in Moscow with the Russian President Vladimir Putin. This meeting took place just two weeks after the last conversation between the two, which lasted for a long time on April 11th in St. Petersburg. Kremlin spokesman Dmitri Peskow confirmed the visit, while state television held the greeting between Witkoff and Putin. Witkoff's machine landed in Wnukowo in Moscow in the morning.

After his arrival, Witkoff also contacted Kirill Dmitrijew, Putin's representative for economic cooperation, and Putin's foreign policy advisor Juri Uschakow. The talks focused on a possible peace agreement in connection with the ongoing Russian attack war against Ukraine. Russia's Foreign Minister Sergei Lawrow made it clear that it still requires fine-tuning for a Ukraine deal.

expectations of the meeting

The USA and Russia had announced the visit of Witkoff in advance without naming a date. Witkoff has spoken to Putin personally several times in the past and was positive about the Russian president after these meetings. "Vladimir Putin is a great leader," said Witkoff, who described the Kremlin boss as someone who wants to end the war in Ukraine. He avoided Putin as a "villain".

In his explanations, he also pointed out that Putin prayed for him after the assassination attempt on Donald Trump last summer. At one of his earlier meetings, Putin Witkoff presented a portrait of Trump that was created by a renowned Russian artist.

strategic changes to the USA

Under the presidency of Donald Trump, the United States changed its course compared to Ukraine. So they no longer support Kyiv in the defensive fight against the Russian invasion in the long term. Instead, Washington puts pressure on Kiev to achieve a quick peace, which could also include the task of territory. Trump and Putin have already phoned, and both sides show a certain willingness for a personal meeting.

Witkoff emphasizes the need to satisfy both Russia and Ukraine in the negotiations on a peace conclusion. The goal was a 30-day ceasefire to discuss a permanent ceasefire. Witkoff said optimistically and noticed that this goal was "not far away".

The situation remains tense, while the world is waiting for possible developments in the US Russia talks about the Ukraine crisis.
