Witten relies on climate protection: Environmental Prize and innovative projects!

On April 7, 2025, the city council of the city council of Witten met to deal with important climate-relevant topics. There were decisive decisions on the agenda, including the introduction of a new environmental award. According to Radio Ennepe Ruhr , this price should be endowed with an amount of 5,000 euros and financed from the city budget. The approval of the city council is required for this measure.

A jury of experts, consisting of members of urban committees and external experts, will honor the submitted projects. These must make a significant contribution to climate protection and nature conservation. This corresponds to the trend to promote municipal initiatives for sustainability and environmental awareness.

The council meeting also included the planning of another climate project that provides for the provision of rainwater containers for schools in Witten. A means of 20,000 euros are planned to collect rainwater. This water is to be used to irrigate trees in the area of the schools during the summer months.

The winners of the Witten Environmental Prize 2023/24 were also announced as part of the current environmental protection initiatives. The city of Witten honored three outstanding projects. The Beautification Association Hohenzollernviertel e.V. received first place for the project "Neighborhood Bet Karl-Marx-Platz", which was given 1,500 euros. environmental and climate protection in context

Progress in municipal environmental and climate policy are in accordance with larger initiatives. The National Climate Comeaurs (NKI) represents an example that shows how locally anchored projects can contribute to reducing greenhouse gas emissions. According to the NKI, the measures have led to a reduction of 18.9 million tons of CO2 equivalents in recent years. This underlines the need for sustainable investments and social participation in order to achieve the climate goals. A total of 6.2 billion euros were invested in various climate protection projects, with an outstanding effect on the environment.

The role of the NKI and the current resolutions of the Witten city council once again realizes how important local measures can contribute to the global challenge of climate change. The newly initiated awards and projects in Witten could serve as inspiration for other cities, start similar initiatives and further promote climate protection.
